Update 1/1/26: The Wildlife Center is open Tuesday through Saturday by appointment only, closed Sunday and Monday. Please call 510-797-9449 to arrange to drop off injured wildlife with one of our trained wildlife care volunteers. Please refer to our guide “Before You Rescue a Wild Animal” prior to calling the WRC.

NOTE: For questions regarding cats, including feral cats, or other domestic animals, please do not call the wildlife center. We need to keep our phone line open for wildlife emergencies. Instead, contact the Ohlone Humane Society’s Main Information Line at (510) 792-4587.

WHAT IS THE WILDLIFE REHABILITATION CENTER?

We accept animals Tuesday through Saturday BY APPOINTMENT ONLY. We are closed on Sunday and Monday. Our phone number is 510-797-9449.

The Ohlone Humane Society Wildlife Rehabilitation Center is where trained rehabilitators provide specialized care for injured, orphaned, displaced, and/or distressed urban wildlife in order to release them back into their native habitat. Some of the wildlife cared for are birds, squirrels, foxes, and reptiles.

Please note that we can only accept wildlife found within Fremont, Newark, or Union City and that an appointment must be made in advance. To determine if the wildlife needs care, please reference our guides on baby birds and/or mammals.

If you have found a wild animal who is injured or orphaned during non-operating hours, we recommend that the public contact their city’s Animal Services Department or one of the following:

The WRC cares for many different species of local animals, including squirrels, coyotes, opossums, rabbits, skunks, hawks, owls, deer, bobcats, and many more! The WRC often takes in orphaned wildlife, and these tiny treasures require extra special love and support. Help us care for the community’s wildlife by donating or volunteering today!

VOLUNTEER

Would you like to help us care for injured and orphaned urban wildlife? We are looking for volunteers!

Our wildlife rehabilitation center is supported by volunteers, memberships and community donations. Our work is seasonal so all volunteering is between the months of April to October.

WHAT VOLUNTEERS DO

New volunteers will be trained to:

Feed our injured and orphaned wildlife
Clean the wildlife habitats at the Center
Prepare meals for our patients
Do laundry, dishes and gardening

VOLUNTEER COMMITMENT

We ask that volunteers commit to:

Commit to at least one 3.5-hour shift, 3 times a month on the same day April to October
Shifts are available every day of the week Sun, Mon, Tues, Thurs, and Sat from 9:00am-12:30pm; Wed and Fri from 10:30am-2:00pm

NEW VOLUNTEER ORIENTATION

Potential volunteers must complete the application process, attend a 90 minute online orientation class, and complete on site training.

ANIMAL CARE VOLUNTEER REQUIREMENTS

REQUIREMENTS

18 years of age or older
Complete the OHS application process
Attend new volunteer orientation and on site training
Commit to a regularly scheduled weekly shift 3 times per month
You must have the ability to stand, kneel, bed over, and twist when cleaning animal enclosures.

CONDUCT

Have a positive attitude and a love for all wildlife
Don’t be afraid to get dirty!
Communicate! We know that people take vacations and have other personal commitments. We are flexible on shift scheduling—just let us know in advance. Our animals depend on committed volunteers for their food, caging and medical needs so we always ask potential volunteers to evaluate their schedules before they join our team.

OHS Wildlife Rehabilitation Center is an animal hospital and not open to the public except during our annual Open House in October. Please do not drop off wildlife if there are no volunteers at the Center. The animal will be vulnerable to harm by humans and other animals.
